New Stuff

In today's post I wanted to highlight some of the new that has come in. You'll remember we just added Curby's Closet to our list of pattern designers, and they had a brand new pattern come out--Quilted Baby Oxfords! These are so adorable, and the pattern works for boys or girls. You can check it out here.

I'm also really excited about a new fabric collection that should be arriving in the next week or so. It's called Pick a Bunch by Nancy Mims of Mod Green Pod for Robert Kaufman. The collection is made of 100% organic cotton, so you can feel good using it, knowing you're making a difference with your sewing! We have it available for preorder here.

Totally Off Topic!

Yes, I am straying far, far away from fabric today, but sometimes you need to, right? Anyway, I just couldn't help myself. Yesterday while shopping at Costco, I came across Mystic Pizza in the frozen section. So? you may be asking yourself. Well, some of you may remember the movie with Julia Roberts back in the late 80's that made the restaurant immortal. Interesting movie, but that's not why I HAD to get a box. You see, I grew up about 20 minutes from Mystic in Connecticut, and since I've been living in California for 15 years, it's a BIG deal! lol  I think it was a bit of nostalgia that lead me to grab the box (plus it does look yummy!), but the funniest part is I've only eaten at Mystic Pizza once in my whole life, and I don't even remember if I liked it or not. But it will be fun to smell the pizza cooking and reminisce about the "olden days" when I used to enjoy visiting Mystic with all of it's charms. (I really hated the tourist traffic though! It could get almost as bad as going through New York City some days--well maybe not quite, but locals have very little tolerance for tourist traffic.) Come to think of it, I'll be visiting my family back there this summer--can't wait! Maybe I'll have to pop in to Mystic Pizza and try it again, and then I can be part of the tourist traffic. :-)

How about you--have you ever bought anything because it brought back memories?

Gone to the (Quilt) Movies Lately?

I've just come across this new movie due to have it's premiere tomorrow, April 8th, and I want to see it! It's a story about three famous people who are friends and includes healthy doses of art, passion, and scandal. Sounds like a blockbuster, right? Well, hold on a minute--it's actually about quilters! The film is a documentary that follows Caryl Bryer Fallert, Hollis Chatelain, and Randall Cook as they create their pieces to enter them in the 2010 Houston quilt show competition. An intriguing part of the puzzle is that "quilting legend Caryl Bryer Fallert was the first to win a major prize for her quilt made with a sewing machine. She mentored Hollis Chatelain who caused a stir when she won an award for a painted quilt. And Hollis mentored Randall Cook who sparked controversy with his quilt of a male nude."*

Now, this won't hit all the movie theaters across the country, so thankfully you can order the DVD. Click here to go to the official website for the movie to get playing cities/times and for info on how you can get a copy of your own.

Giveaway & Interview with Chris from Curby's Closet--Unique Babywear

Today I'm excited to introduce you to Chris Anderson, the designer behind Curby's Closet Patterns. I'm sure you will fall in love with these adorable patterns as quickly as I did! Chris has also graciously given me patterns for a give-away, so look for the rules for that at the end of this post. Now, on to the interview:

FL: Tell us a bit about yourself and family.

Chris from Curby's Closet
I am a wife, mother and homemaker. I have been for many years. Now that my boys are grown I have had more time to do some of the creative things that I have always enjoyed. Curby's Closet has very much been a family affair and my husband has played a huge part in keeping me organized and with sales. My oldest son has helped me with improving my sales and my younger son has done most of the graphic design. We live in sunny Southern California and live fairly close to the great beaches and lovely mountains.

Quilted Baby Ballet Shoes
FL:  How long have you been designing patterns, and how did you get started?

I have been designing patterns for about 1 1/2 years now.  I never thought that this would be something that I could ever do or would enjoy. So it's been a fun surprise! That's why my first pattern #101 is simply titled Quilted Baby Shoe. I really had no idea how they would go over and if I could design any other styles. But they were such a great hit, I just kept on going!

Quilted Baby Cowboy Boots
FL: Who in your life influenced your love of sewing? How?

My love for sewing began at a very young age and was instilled in me by my mother and grandmother. I can vividly remember sitting at their feet and being taught how to mend and sew. My grandmother made me a cute little sewing kit which included needle, thread, pins etc. I thought that I was so grown up. I loved to design and make little outfits for my dolls.

Quilted Baby Loafers
FL: What is your favorite part of the design process?

My favorite part of the design process is taking the drawings that are scratched on paper and to actually make it out of quilted fabric or just fabric and have it look even better than I thought it would!  It always amazes me when it comes together and works out just right.

Quilted Baby Mary Jane
FL: Do you have a story behind any of your patterns that you can share?

This little pattern business actually began as I was restoring and selling vintage baby clothes and customers wanted to have a pair of baby shoes to go with them. That is how the first little shoe came about. They were so popular that a friend encouraged me to make a pattern so quilters and sewers could make their own.
Petite Bug Bag Purse
FL: What advice would you give to anyone looking to design their own pattern line?

Do not tell yourself that "you can't" because trust me "you can" and you may find that you love and enjoy it a lot more than you ever dreamed.

Quilted Baby Shoe
FL: And finally, tell us a fun fact about yourself.

My full name is Christeve because I was born on Christmas Eve! Kind of different I know, needless to say that's why I go by Chris.

Thanks, Chris, for sharing with us, and for the pattern give-away! Aren't her patterns just so cute?! Click here to see the listings for her patterns. And here's how you can win a copy of her Quilted Baby Shoes and Petite Bug Bag Purses patterns--all you need to do is leave a comment below saying which pattern (out of all of them) you like best. For an extra entry just Blog, Tweet, or Facebook the contest. (If you Tweet, make sure to mention @FabricLovers and @Curby's Closet.) Then come back and leave an additional comment saying you've done so. I'll choose the winner via Random.org on Monday at 9 am PT, April 11. Good Luck!
